The fracking debate

The debate over shale gas is relevant to large parts of the Yorkshire and Humber region which are licensed for exploration.

This is a fast moving area of policy and practice and has sparked much debate in recent months.

CPRE North Yorkshire has been extremely involved in last few months with the fracking issue in Ryedale and have submitted several objection documents, one as recently as February 2016.

CPRE recognise that we all have a role to play to reduce our energy consumption but we are realistic and recognise there are no easy solutions to our energy mix if we are to meet our current needs and allow for fuel security in the long-term.

Although shale gas exploitation could reduce the use of more damaging resources such as coal we must also continue to move towards a cleaner, more renewable mix.
